You’re Not Broken If You Need Help Naming Feelings

And no, it’s not “just being dramatic.”

If you’ve ever sat in therapy thinking, “Uhh… I guess I’m just tired?” when you are asked about your feelings — you’re not alone. Also, you are definitely not broken.

The truth is: many of us weren’t taught how to identify what we’re feeling, let alone why we’re feeling it. When we were struggling with big emotions we got messages like:

  • “You’re too sensitive.”

  • “Calm down.”

  • “It’s not that serious.”

  • “You’re fine.”

So instead of learning emotional language, we learned how to shut down, avoid, over-explain, or just plain isolate.

Cue adulthood (or adolescence) where suddenly we’re trying to build relationships, advocate for ourselves, or just survive the day and we can’t quite name what’s happening inside.

Here’s the reality:
💡 Being overwhelmed, irritable, shut down, or anxious doesn’t make you broken. It means your system is communicating something.
🧠 Therapy can help you slow down enough to figure out what that something is (with zero shame attached).
💬 Sometimes we need a little help learning the words for what we’re carrying. That’s not weakness. That’s healing.

So next time you catch yourself spiraling into “what’s wrong with me?” — try this instead:
What if nothing’s wrong with you?
What if you’re just in the process of figuring out what’s real?

Let’s name it.
Let’s normalize it.
Let’s drop the shame around needing support.
